Exhibition ‘What Remains’

‘Wat blijft’ is an exhibition about reuse, and the traces that become visible when functions disappear. In ‘Wat blijft’, the works are linked by their focus on material, structure and time. The exhibition shows how meaning does not disappear, but shifts – how it settles into details, traces of use and new connections. The exhibition features the work of three artists:

Maya Mastwijk

Maya Mastwijk creates sculptures from carefully selected discarded materials. Without using glue or screws, she brings objects together in a precarious balance, in which each part depends on the other. Her work explores balance, fragility and tension: every element is essential to the survival of the whole.

Erik Stokker

Graphic designer Erik Stokker creates his work using the rOtring Radiograph drawing pen. He has developed a distinctive visual language in which precision and imagination converge. With this, he constructs highly detailed worlds from dots, rhythms and minute structures. His work moves between realism, abstraction and science fiction. The drawings invite you to lose yourself in them: what begins as a detail becomes a landscape; what appears to be order turns out to be movement.

Jeltje van Houten

Jeltje van Houten cuts up linen covers and pages from second-hand books to create geometric collages in which colour, texture and typography take centre stage. Colour and texture tell the story; traces of age and use – such as wear and tear, discolouration and fraying – add an extra dimension. By cutting, shifting and rearranging, a new story emerges that builds on what was once read, used and preserved.

The exhibition ‘Wat blijft’ is on display from 9 July to 27 September at Museum Nagele, which is open every week from Thursday to Sunday between 13:00 and 17:00. You can, of course, also view the permanent exhibition during these times.
