Shipwreck on Schokland

This summer, experience an impressive and unique theatre experience on Schokland with 'Shipwreck on Schokland' by Compagnie Dakar. This site-specific theatre performance, inspired by a gripping 1895 shipwreck, tells the true story of a skipper's family and asks probing questions about solidarity and humanity that are still relevant today. With a mix of professional actors and local talent from the Noordoostpolder , the story comes to life at several locations in the landscape, moving you from scene to scene by bicycle.

The story
Christmas 1895. During a bleak storm, skipper Hendrik, his wife Hendrika, their baby and his father are shipwrecked off Schokland. Woman and child are tied to the mast - according to tradition. Hendrik ties himself to the helm.

Then suddenly a ship sails alongside. Despite entreaties, it disappears again. A day later, Hendrik is rescued. Months later, the bodies of the others wash ashore. A trial follows: the skipper sailing alongside is sentenced to a prison term.

The show
The performance zooms in on the dilemma of solidarity and what binds us - as human beings, as skippers, as Schokker. Because the question from 1895 had to answer, has not disappeared. We see it reflected on the news, on the Mediterranean, in the world around us: how far does our duty to 'save' extend - and is this solidarity still decisive for our 'common' identity?
