Butterfly festival in the Kuinderbos

On Sunday 19 July, the Kuinderbos will be the setting for a special milestone: the 10th edition of the annual Butterfly Day. Staatsbosbeheer is calling on nature lovers to help count butterflies in the Kuinderbos, an area known as one of the richest butterfly spots in the Netherlands.

This reputation is not accidental. Years of targeted forest edge management have increased the availability of nectar - essential for butterflies, while this has declined sharply in the Netherlands. With success: species such as the lesser kingfisher butterfly and the greater wheatear butterfly have established themselves in the Kuinderbos. According to experts, this is even the only place in the Netherlands where sometimes five different butterfly species can be seen on one flower at the same time.

During the counting afternoon, participants set off in small groups along fixed routes. New this year is the digital counting via the Count4Nature app, which records observations even more accurately. The traditional way of counting also remains possible.

Last year, 96 volunteers counted almost 3,000 butterflies. The organisation hopes for a large turnout again this anniversary year. Butterfly Counting Day will take place on Sunday 19 July from 12:45 to 15:30. Registration can be done at www.staatsbosbeheer.nl/vlindertellingkuinderbos.
