Marknesse's first house was completed in 1949. However, there is an even older building: a barrack that still served as a shelter for the pioneers who came to reclaim the polder. The village lies between Emmeloord and Vollenhove (Overijssel), on one of the first completed approach roads to the Noordoostpolder. Today, Marknesse is the largest village in the Noordoostpolderder.
Due to its location on both the Zwolse Vaart and the Marknesservaart, Marknesse is a great destination or stopover for pleasure boating. There is therefore a yacht centre as well as a charter company for renting boats.
When it comes to the production and sale of regional products, Marknesse is an important hotspot. There are several farm and regional shops, where you can buy delicious fresh fruit, vegetables and other local products all year round.
Marknesse will be best known for its location near the Waterloopbos: a major tourist attraction in the Noordoostpolderder. You will find more information about this below.
In the farm shop of organic Eko-boerderij De Eerste, you will not only find organic farm cheese and yoghurt from their own cows, but also various vegetables and potatoes from their arable farm and fresh eggs from the laying hens that scratch through the orchard.
At Wijngaard en Boerderijwinkel Maronesse, you can enjoy guided tours, wine tastings and regional products from its own kitchen or the neighbour's field or kitchen.
At Fruitbedrijf Van Rijn in Marknesse, you can buy fresh apples and pears from its own orchard. These are sold via a stall in the farmyard.
In Fruitbedrijf Masteling's shop, you can buy apples and pears from its own orchard. You will also find other products, such as eggs and potatoes and onions from the region. It also sells a wide range of natural fruit juices, traditionally made and without additives.
Nowhere else in the Noordoostpolder can you just walk and pick among the tulip fields, but at the Tulip Picking Garden in Marknesse, you can pick a bucket or basket full of colourful tulips (during tulip season, usually in April and May) to take home with you for a flat fee per person.
From the stall of Proviand van het Land, various arable products are sold, such as potatoes and onions. But apples, pears, Blokzijler Brok (a regional speculaas cake) and eggs are also on sale at the stall.
The Waterloopbos is not only a beautiful nature reserve, but also the location where the Waterloopkundig Laboratorium conducted over 200 hydrological studies from the 1950s to the 1990s. They mimicked reality with water, weirs, dams and wave machines, designing the Delta Works and the ports of Rotterdam, Istanbul and Bangkok, among others. Thanks to the various info panels, walking past these scale models is not only beautiful, but also very educational.
There are two landscape artworks in the Noordoostpolder, one of which is near Marknesse: Deltawerk//. The giant wave basin in which the Delta Works were once tested has been transformed by an artist into a giant work of art, with the walls of the former Delta flume now standing askew, offering a beautiful interplay of dark and light, surrounded by the beautiful nature of the Waterloopbos.
In the car park of Hotel -Restaurant Fletcher Marknesse, there is a shared bike hub. You can reserve the e-bikes in this hub, unlock them and pay for the time used afterwards via the app of Deelfiets Nederland. This allows you to take a nice bike ride through the area, even if you don't have your own bike (with you).
Just walk into the field and pick tulips? You wouldn't do that! Or do you? Well, okay, but only at the Tulip Picking Garden in Marknesse. And then of course only during tulip season, usually in the months of April and May. For a fixed fee, you can pick a large bunch of tulips, but you can also take extensive photos among the tulips here, something that is not allowed in the fields of the farmers along the tulip route.
At sculpture garden and gallery Klein Afrika in Marknesse, you can enjoy African art outside in the large farm garden and inside in a barn converted into an exhibition space. You will find stone sculptures, wood carvings, batik and paintings, among others, all bought at a fair price to give a good future to artists in countries such as Zimbabwe, Gambia, Mali, Sengal and Nigeria.
Located right next to the monument Deltawerk//, Paviljoen het ProefLab// is the perfect utival base for a walk through the Waterloopbos. The restaurant also houses the visitors' centre of Natuurmonumenten and dog snacks are available.
Are you going to spend the night here? Then be sure to come on Wednesday or Thursday to experience a local tradition: Wednesday pizza day and Thursday spareribs day. Of course, you can enjoy these even if you don't stay at the hotel.
