As early as the 14th century, there must have been a village named Ruthne on an island north of Urk. From that village, the Germanic word for bush, among other things, Rutten takes its name. Rutten is the northernmost village in the Noordoostpolder. Initially, Rutten was planned a few kilometres less north, but the expansion of the original plan for the Noordoostpolder der to include the additional villages of Bant and Creil necessitated the relocation of the yet unbuilt Rutten. The construction of Rutten only began in 1952, ten years after reclamation, and the village has been inhabited since spring 1953.
With MC NOP "De Ruttense Brug", Rutten has one of the most beautiful motocross tracks in the Netherlands. The track is 250 metres long and has a mix of sand and clay as a surface. This makes it a fast and technical circuit that is very suitable for both experienced and novice riders.
Rutten is home to several (small) producers of delicious regional products. Not only potatoes and onions are grown here, but also soups, stews, aioli and bruschetta are made and sold locally. At the local shop Van de Buren, you will find these Rutten delicacies, as well as those from neighbouring villages.
Do you like plants? And especially lilies and irises? Then you should definitely visit Kwekerij Joosten's show garden in Rutten. It covers no less than 2,400 square metres and is set up in the shape of an iris. You will also find perennials such as hostas, geraniums and roses. And well, pick up a potted plant for home right away!
