Nagele is a special village. Even during construction, it attracted a lot of interest, both from architects and other experts, as well as from newspaper reporters and visitors to the Noordoostpolder. The village stood out for its spacious layout, lots of greenery and houses with flat roofs.
The heritage route takes you through Nagele. The village is located in the Noordoostpolderder, which was reclaimed for food production in 1942. Nagele is one of the villages in the polder built especially for agricultural workers. It is still a striking village. It is very different in design from the other villages in the polder. A group of architects from Het Nieuwe Bouwen made the plan for Nagele. The architects were looking for a case study for the International Congress of Modern Architecture. They asked for a programme of requirements for a village in the Noordoostpolder and they were commissioned to design the village. This gave the architects a chance to work out their innovative ideas and design an entire village in one go. Reactions to the design were mixed. Some people could not get used to the residential courtyards and soberly designed houses. Others, on the contrary, were happy with the modern facilities, lots of greenery and space in the village and in the houses.
The cultural-historical walk leads you past architecture and through greenery and gives you a beautiful picture of the modern village in the polder. The richly illustrated walking guide 'Nagele. A cultural-historical walk' is for sale at Museum Nagele. The route shown here is an indication of that route, but not exactly the same.
