The Voorster forest is a mushroom paradise. Of the 3,500 species of mushrooms in the Netherlands, no less than 800 can be found in Voorsterbos, making it an ideal place for a walk.
If you look closely, you will find shells in the Voorsterbos. Strange, though. Shells in a forest. They remind us of the time when the Voorsterbos was not a forest, but a Zuiderzee. They are very useful for nature, because the soil becomes calcareous. Lime, in turn, is good for the growth of mushrooms and unusual plants such as greater beetle orchid, sole fern and broad wasp orchid.
Here, boulder clay from the penultimate ice age is in the ground. It lets water through poorly, which made the area unsuitable for agriculture. Foresters planted different trees there because they did not know which species would grow well.

The Stienteroute owes its name to Natuurkampeerterrein De Stiente, a campsite closed years ago by Natuurmonumenten, which also manages this route. Follow the green route from the car park near the foresters' office on Kraggenburgerweg.
