On Lindeweg just north of Luttelgeest stands a fine example of the shock concrete barns so characteristic of the Noordoostpolder . Shock concrete is concrete where, initially by accident, all the air bubbles had been vibrated out, making it smoother and harder than regular concrete. And the best part: you could make it remotely, in a factory, and then build it into a barn very quickly at the construction site. Ideal for the large number of farm barns that had to be completed in the newly drained polder at a rapid pace.
After the war, around a thousand barns had to be built in the Noordoostpolder. NV Schokbeton from Zweindrecht had just opened a new branch in Kampen, and with the tobacco industry in decline, there was no shortage of staff. The prefabricated barns were driven into the new polder and were erected within six weeks.

Shock concrete or assembly sheds were built in three series in the years 1949-1958. Structural and aesthetic changes were made in the second and third series. Those changes included the foundation, the roof construction the thickness and appearance of the wall elements, and the stable construction. You can find Schokbeton barns in the Netherlands only in the Noordoostpolder and this one on Lindeweg is thus a fine example of it. View it at your leisure from the road, for example during the "Over de Zeebodem" cycle tour, but do not enter the yard, as it is privately owned and not open to the public.
