The Noordoostpolder has been dry for more than 80 years. Time has not stood still in all those years here, at the bottom of the former Zuiderzee. Islanders on Urk suddenly became mainlanders. The former island of Schokland, with its rich history, acquired UNESCO World Heritage status. And the new land, even during World War II, was further cultivated and increasingly populated. This was subject to a strict selection procedure for years, because you did not just become a resident of the Noordoostpolderder. The history of the Noordoostpolder, however young, tells a beautiful story of struggle and perseverance, but especially of pioneering in the new land.
