In the 12th century the seigniory of Kuinre was established on the border of Friesland and the Utrechtse Oversticht.

Kuinderburcht I
The first castle of Kuinre was probably built between 1165 and 1197. At the end of the 12th century, it was in the possession of the Lord of Kuinre, 'Heynric die Crane', charged as ministerialis of the Bishop van Utrecht with supervision of the local land clearings. In 1197 the castle was razed by the Frisians. In 1204 a new castle was built on the same site.

Kuinderburcht II
In 1378 the castle was abandoned, and a new castle was built on the other bank of the Kuinder. Between 1510-1527 during the Guelderian Wars, the castle was conquered by Gelre and retaken by Utrecht several times. In 1531-1536 the castle was finally destroyed. The ruins were partly under water.

Draining
After the reclamation of the Noordoostpolder in 1942, the terrain was explored by archaeologists. On the grounds of Kuinderburcht I, the foundation was partly reconstructed, while Kuinderburcht II was covered with earth.

Parking
The Kuinderburcht lies in the Kuinderbos. There is space for parking on the Hopweg. From there, a paved path runs to the ruins of the Kuinderburcht.
