Do you enjoy visiting museums? And do you like learning about the area you are visiting? Then you should definitely not miss the museums of the Noordoostpolder! In addition to our two official museums, we also have a museum house, a visitor centre and an experience centre. You can discover them here.
Museum Schokland is located on Middelbuurt, one of the last three dwelling mounds on the former island of Schokland. The museum is housed in a collection of buildings surrounding the historic church of Middelbuurt. The museum's indoor and outdoor exhibitions provide an insight into the geology and archaeology of the Noordoostpolder, the life of the Schokker population on the former island in the wild Zuiderzee and the reclamation of the Noordoostpolder.
More about Museum SchoklandWhy do all the buildings in the village of Nagele have flat roofs? And which famous architects designed this village? You can find out at Museum Nagele, which is housed in a former church that was designed by an architect. With a flat roof, of course. At Museum Nagele, you will learn everything about the history of the creation and design of this unique village, where even the landscaping and the design of the cemetery were created by a landscape architect.
More about Museum NageleA stone's throw from Museum Nagele, you can immerse yourself even further in a specific part of the history of the Noordoostpolder at Museumhuis Polman: how did the first polder pioneers live in Nagele? The house is furnished entirely in 1950s style and will be a feast of recognition for older visitors. Younger visitors, on the other hand, will be amazed by the interior and will not even know what many of the items are or what they were used for. Oh, and the name? The first residents of this house were members of the Polman family.
More about Museum house PolmanThe unique Waterloopbos in the Noordoostpolder is managed by Natuurmonumenten. At the Het ProefLab// visitor centre, you can learn all about the flora and fauna of the Waterloopbos, and check out a small but really interesting exhibition about the hydrological research that was done in this forest from the 1950s to the 1990s. Het ProefLab// also has a cosy restaurant where you can enjoy coffee and cake or a delicious lunch between 10:00 and 17:00, either before or after a lovely walk in the woods.
More about Het ProefLab//How does a wind turbine work? And how much noise does it generate? At 11 Beaufort, you can experience the power of wind turbines and learn more about wind turbines and sustainable energy in an interactive way. You can even generate your own electricity: who can cycle faster, you or your opponent? From here, you can also experience the grandeur of the nearby Noordoostpolder Wind Farm, with or without a guide. This wind farm has no fewer than 86 wind turbines along the dikes of the IJsselmeer, and 11 Beaufort offers guided tours here (by appointment).
