Lords of Kuinre
When the Noordoostpolder was reclaimed, the remains of two castles with moat structure and ramparts were found near Kuinre. They are remnants of the castle of the illustrious Lords of Kuinre. They built the castle around 1150 on a strategically located spot near the old course of the river Tjonger or Kuinder. From there, they undertook raids on the Zuiderzee and controlled shipping to the Hanseatic cities. The Kuinderbos has tried to give an idea of the size of this castle. From the Kuinderberg you have a nice view of the island with the castle remains. A vista panel with several information panels complete this viewpoint.
