You can recognise a TOP by the 3-metre-high Corten steel column in a (free) car park with a restaurant nearby. This column features both a map of the area and various cycling and walking routes that you can follow from here. These routes link up perfectly with the national network of cycle junctions. If you’ve already picked out a walking or cycling route on this website, you can download the GPX file and upload it to your sat-nav, so you can easily follow the route using that too.
It’s not just at our TOPs that you’ll find free car parks. There are also several large car parks in the centre of Emmeloord where you can park your car for free, provided you display a parking disc. Ideal for a quick trip to the hairdresser’s, but also for a leisurely lunch or dinner, or for an entire afternoon’s shopping. Free parking is also available in all the villages in the Noordoostpolder .

Where the Noordoostpolder now lies, the Zuiderzee once raged fiercely and ships would occasionally be lost there. Some of these ships have been excavated, but a large number remain preserved within the landscape. As a result, you usually cannot see the wreck itself, but the location is marked by a blue-and-white post topped with a red ship.
Whilst driving through the Noordoostpolder , you’ll come across two types of marker posts in the landscape. The first type are known as ‘crash posts’. These mark the locations where an aeroplane crashed or made an emergency landing during the Second World War. These were usually Allied aircraft, but they may also have been German aircraft. You can recognise the crash markers by the three-metre-high blue-and-white post topped with a bright red aeroplane.
As well as shipwrecks and crashed aeroplanes, there are many other interesting features in the landscape of the Noordoostpolder that are no longer visible. To keep these historical sites and events alive, 12 viewing panels have been placed throughout the Noordoostpolder . These use a drawing to project an object or activity in 3D onto the landscape. The accompanying information panels tell you what you’re looking at.
