Gilbert is an auctioneer and former pig farmer, and he was born and raised in the Noordoostpolderder. In recent years, he has given many presentations and tours around windmills in the Noordoostpolder. Invariably, these included questions from the audience about the reclamation of the polder. Because he wanted to be able to give a correct and comprehensive answer, he went into detail about how part of the former Zuiderzee was made into today's Noordoostpolder and subsequently developed into the best and most expensive agricultural land in the Netherlands.
