The oldest food forest in the Noordoostpolder is situated in the Emmelerbos in Emmeloord. Here you’ll find a standard-tree orchard, a stinzen garden, strip farming and beds of edible flowers and herbs. The food forest is freely accessible to visitors. In addition, the food forest’s volunteers are happy to give guided tours of the forest. These are available by appointment and for a fee for groups, but you’re also welcome to drop in spontaneously every Wednesday morning between 09:00 and 12:00. During this regular working morning, there is always someone on hand to give you a guided tour. The food forest also organises all sorts of educational activities, such as fun hands-on activities for children, outdoor lessons for schools, and cooking and/or baking workshops in the kitchen of the Belgian barracks. Once the fruit and nut trees are a bit older and bigger, harvest days will also be organised.

A food forest is perhaps the most nature-inclusive way of producing food. Or the most edible form of nature. It all depends on how you look at it. Next to No Shit Farm Zonnegoed in Ens, a five-and-a-half-hectare woodland has been under development since 2020, full of edible trees, shrubs and perennials. And teeming with life: birds, insects, hedgehogs and rabbits. And people. To harvest the produce. Every now and then, No Shit Boerderij Zonnegoed organises guided tours of the farm, where you can learn all about organic vegan farming, the food forest, agroforestry, straw cultivation, regenerative soil management and much more.
