Goldsmith Marcel Jaasma runs a goldsmith studio in a monumental Delft School building in the middle of Emmeloord. He had owned the building for years and dreamed of developing it into a studio. He himself is a household name in Emmeloord, where he had a goldsmith studio/shop on Kettingstraat for 30 years. But he wants to focus more on commissioned works. "I feel I can serve my customers better that way," says the diamantaire/goldsmith." In a shop, anyone can walk in. That's very cosy, but I want to focus entirely on goldsmithing now."

Delft School
The national monument at 7B Koningin Julianastraat, where Jaasma took up residence, dates from 1947-1948 and is a representative of the Delft School. The building, which was in use as a garage, stands among middle-class houses built on behalf of the Wieringermeer directorate, Noordoostpolder works department. "It has all the characteristics of the Delft School," Jaasma explains. "The simplicity, the solid brick walls, the beautiful brickwork and the use of materials, such as the steel windows." Working with K4 Architects and Hulshof Bouw en Restauratie, Jaasma restored the building to its full glory.
Atelier
As this is a national monument, the exterior has been carefully restored according to standards. The interior has been given an industrial touch. All white stone walls have been kept intact, and industrial lamps have been used to preserve the artisanal atmosphere. Thirty per cent of the ground floor is set up as a goldsmith's studio, complete with a roller, drawing bench, polishing machine and workbench.
Open Monument Day 2024
During Open Monumentendag 2024 on 14 and 15 September, goldsmith Marcel Jaasma will open his doors to the public. He is very proud of his new studio in this monumental Delft School building in the middle of Emmeloord. And his craft as a goldsmith fits this building 100%. On 14 and 15 September 2024, he will be happy to tell the public all about both his craft and the history of the cultural-historical building in which his studio is located. Whether he will participate in Open Monumentendag again in future years will be communicated in due course.
