Stage 4 of the Pionierspad, a long-distance walk of more than 200 kilometres, passes through the Noordoostpolder and across the former island of Schokland. You walk through a landscape where plots, ditches, roads and rows of trees are straight. Until 1932, Schokland lay like a real island in the Zuiderzee. Now it rises above the rest of the polder landscape like an island on dry land.
There are several locations along the way where you can stop to see something or get a snack or drink, so take your time to walk this stage at your leisure.
Part of the route on Schokland goes along the Keileemweg. This is closed to cars and cyclists due to a bad road surface, but walkers are allowed to use it. During your walk there, however, pay close attention to potholes and other bumps in the road.
