Oud-Kraggenburg is a former (peninsular) island in the Zuiderzee, with a lightkeeper's house. A house with a light stand or lighthouse, built on a mound. At the foot of that mound a small inner harbour, also called a refuge harbour, where once sailing ships and steamboats could take shelter in fog and storms.
Old Kraggenburg lies like an island in the country, raised high above the fields and the cycle path and far away from through roads. The basalt dykes around the mound form a protective fortress around the picturesque house with its white gable and green shutters. Anyone cycling in from the (north) west will see a cast-iron bell on the edge of the roof that once served as a fog bell. The lighthouse perched atop the house, with its red roof, is visible from afar. Inside, the well in one of the rooms is an exceptional detail in the interior. Looking out through the window from this point in the house, one can see a well in the garden. The two wells are connected like communicating vessels. Standing on the mound, you never cease to be amazed by the vastness of the view.
This area is only accessible during open monument day. On other days, this area is not open to the public.
