Until the island was declared uninhabitable in 1859, the waves of the Zuiderzee pounded against Schokland. The Refuge Route takes you back to those days. In addition to the cultural highlights of this World Heritage Site, this walk takes you through the Schokker forest, past marshlands and wet polders with rich nature. You can park your car for free at Car Park Lichtwachterswoning on Oud Emmeloorderweg, accessible from the A6, exit Nagele (N716). The car park is at the level of care farm GAAFF, but on the other side of the road.
Part of the walk goes along the Keileemweg. This is closed to cars and cyclists, but as a hiker you can use it. Just be careful of potholes and other bumps in the road.
