Island hopping

This route takes you past the islands of Urk, Schokland and the Oud Kraggenburg peninsula, which are still visible as 'terps' in the polder. Unique in the Netherlands and perhaps the world!

The route starts at a special place: a testing ground for water works from all over the world. At the Black Lake, you pass the 135-metre-long artwork Pier + Horizon. Back in the polder, an elevation in the landscape with a beacon looms up: the former peninsula Oud-Kraggenburg... Click the Description tab below for more information about this route.

On 3 October 1939, Mayor Keijzer of Urk and Mayor Krijger of Lemsterland shook hands on the gap in the dike of the Noordoostpolder in Flevoland that had been closed minutes before. Urk was off island; an emotional event for residents. This cycling route takes you past the islands of Urk, Schokland and the peninsula of Oud Kraggenburg, which are still visible as 'terps' in the polder. Unique in the Netherlands and perhaps in the world!

The route starts at a special place: the Waterloopbos was once a testing ground for water works from all over the world. You will find scale models of the Delta Works and Bangkok harbour, among others. At the Black Lake, you pass the 135-metre-long artwork Pier + Horizon. Back in the polder, an elevation in the landscape with a beacon looms up: the former peninsula of Oud-Kraggenburg.

Time to hop to the next island. You cycle sheltered among the orchards to Ens. From Ramsdijk, you dive to the former seabed. But not for long: via a cycle path you reach the 'beaches' of the former island of Schokland. The elongated island (World Heritage Site since 1995) is a reminder of the battle against the water, which was not always won by man. Due to persistent land abandonment and poverty, the 650 Schokkers had to leave the island in 1859 by order of the king. During a loop across the northern tip of the island, you can admire the old lighthouse and lighthouse.

After passing the Ketelbrug bridge, you will see the former island of Urk with its lighthouse. Urk fishermen did not let the construction of the Afsluitdijk in 1933 throw them off balance. They built bigger ships and went fishing in the North Sea, after which fishing flourished. The 'miracle of Urk' had happened. The old village on 'De Bult' is a perfect place for a coffee stop on the terrace. The last 25 kilometres of the route, with a bit of luck, you will be blown back towards the Waterloopbos by the wind. Via a prominent cobblestone road, you reach the forest where the end of the route is located. At the visitor centre, you can discuss your island hopping day with a drink.

*Wind
No hills in the polder? That's right! But still, you can train your climber's legs on our very own Wall of Woei. Because we have no shortage of wind in Flevoland. However, we can help you avoid encountering the Muur van Woei too often (and having to ride quite an open stretch against the wind): ride this route clockwise with south and west winds (standard route). And anti-clockwise in north and east winds.

Please pay attention!
A number of comments and warnings apply to this route:

  • At Schokland, the route includes a section of shell path.
  • After the Ketel bridge, on the Zuidermeerdijk, you cycle past a fence where there is also a wildlife grid. The grid can be very slippery, especially as you have to steer.

Fun for partner/family
The route starts at a special place: the Waterloopbos was once a testing ground for water works from all over the world. You'll find scale models of the Delta Works and Bangkok harbour, among others. There are beautiful walking routes through this forest, for young and old. The route passes Schokland and Urk. Schokland is fun to visit for adults and children interested in history. At Urk, you can score some delicious seafood.
